Okay, Nemo is cute, but getting past that, I really enjoy their hosting
an anemone and the antics of their feeding and protecting their anemone
home. I feel these are the best type suited to our aquariums by
remaining a small fish and a very colorfull one at that.
Any meaty fresh or
prepared foods are readily accepted. Although it is important that it
be placed near their hosting anemone as they are usualy reluctant to
stray far from home. They will not roam the tank looking for food, it
pretty much has to drift near their home.
An anemone, yes,
you can breed, raise and keep them without one, but I feel they
developed their hosting need for a reason and if allowed to host things
such as corals, they can develop skin problems.
As long as another fish type does not get very close to their home base, they could care less about other fish. As with all clownfish species, they should not be kept with other clown species unless you have a very large aquarium. The percula types, due to their small size will not being able to stand up to the larger species should overcrowding become an issue with other species
of clownfish. I consider the clownfish family to be reef safe in that
they will not bother corals or other invertebrates. The only time they
become an issue with corals is if they pick a coral to host upon and
through their constant contact, irritate the coral to where it is
unable to properly feed or gather light.
